Richard Fennell Reception

Tonight 6-8PM at City Art Gallery

City Art Gallery presents new works by ECU alumnus, Richard Fennell. Join us for an evening with one of North Carolina's premier painters. Richard Fennell captures the changing of the seasons and the evolution of nature as seasonal cycles progress. Using a rich palette of colors suggested by his surroundings and a highly developed brush technique, the artist depicts not only the landscape of North Carolina but also the elements that make it what it is. It is a very personal, light-filled, lush vision.

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Oh goodness; the week is almost over! Where does time go? I had a very successful visit to DC last weekend. In addition to trying out three "new to me" restaurants (including the amazing Coco Sala...a must try!) the galleries and museums were incredible! The Morandi exhibition at the Phillips was fabulous. Who knew you could do so much with simple objects! I discovered the Burton Marinkovich gallery...a tiny little place, up a flight of stairs, but with a BIG banner outside luring you in. They feature primarily prints and drawings by modern and contemporary masters. I was able to see prints by Motherwell, Hockney, Kandinsky, Diebenkorn and Calder. It was great fun and the very knowledgeable owner was "tending shop" which made it quite an educational experience. Above is a painting by one of my favorite "modern masters" that we carry in our Gallery, Wayne Trapp. He will be featured in the Gallery 2 weeks, beginning Thursday May 7th, along with Kate Worm. More to come on that exhibition and opening.
Cheers!

Time to Fire up the wood Kiln!

Here is a work by Jeremy Fineman, a great ceramics artist at ECU. This is a ceramic vessell aprox. 9 in tall for $125. Tonight I will be helping fire a wood kiln with him, the kiln needs to be constantly maned for 5 days, so this involves shifts of 8 hours. So from 12midnight to 8am I will be feeding wood into the kiln. The constant fuel is what creates the unique finish to wood fired pieces. After the 5 days the kiln has to cool for a week, then we can show you a few pieces that were fired. Have a great weekend, Jeff

Spring Fling Continues

The Radish painting (12 by 12 ) by Jaquelin Perry is $325 , what a great price for such a well executed piece . Everett Seafood 6 by 8 is by Mike Rooney and is $125, another fabulous price. Both of these artists are being featured in our current exhibit known as Spring Fling. Those lucky people attending the opening on April 2 were treated to a painting demonstration by Perry and Rooney. The exhibit will continue through May 2. All of you late stragglers need to get in right away to see this great show. Torrey

Continuing Education

Photo of the Jefferson Memorial through the cherry blossoms is by Brenton Hardee. See more of her photography on the City Art Gallery website at: www.cityartgreenville.com/brentonhardeephotography.htm

It's continuing education time for me! I am leaving tomorrow for DC for a long weekend of gallery hopping, museum viewing, and meeting with artists from the northern Virginia and DC area. The Phillips Collection (my personal favorite!) is featuring Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life. Giorgio Morandi was an Italian painter who shared a tiny apartment with his mother and three sisters growing up in Bologna. He painted from an early age and only had the resources for subject matter that were part of his home environment. He created numerous still life paintings by rearranging simple objects like bottles, jars, and pitchers. He captured the beauty of light on these simple forms. The National Portrait Gallery is featuring Presidents in Waiting. This exhibition focuses on the fourteen vice presidents who succeeded to the presidency, either upon the death of a sitting president, election in their own right, or (in one case), the resignation of a president. Can't wait. Off to the Capitol City! I'll post new info when I return on Monday.
Cheers!

It's Almost Spring Fling!!

Well, we made it through April Fools Day with only minor glitches! Jeff has patched and painted the walls; Torrey has hung another great show; and I have all of the title cards and resumes printed, and the web site updated. Tomorrow night is the opening of our second (perhaps annual!) SPRING FLING!! We are teaming with Finelli's (our great Italian neighbor), It's Sew Wright (with everything to monogram you can dream of), Bailey's Fine Jewelry ("Fine" says it all), and the new spring fashions of Whimsey. Finelli's is hosting a superb wine tasting on the patio with 4 different wine reps pouring from 4 separate vineyards. We are hosting Adam Sebti and Jared Walker on keyboard and guitar with light jazz right outside of our open doors. Jaquelin Perry and Mike Rooney will be painting inside the gallery for your enjoyment. We have even extended the hours to accomodate everyone's hectic schedule...5:30 til 8:30. You need to be here Thursday night April 2nd. See you then!
Cheers!!

Another Ad Designed

Well today I designed the next ad for City Art Gallery. We are putting a nice ad in the Women for Women book. As well, I finished the ad yesterday for the next show at City Art Gallery; it's the Spring Fling on Thursday April 2nd. Our end of the Lynndale Shoppes is uniting for the second year in a row to bring you an outstanding evening of entertainment. We are having a painting demo by two gallery artists, Mike Rooney and Jaqueline Perry. Shown here is a new painting by Mike Rooney; view more of his works at City Art Gallery. Finelli's will host a wine tasting on the patio. There you will also be able to experience the light jazz keyboard sounds of Adam Sebti and Friends. Make your dinner reservation at Finelli's for the best Italian anywhere! Forget that you gave up carbs for Lent!! Bailey's will be kicking off their count down to Mother's Day sale. It's Sew Wright (our newest neighbor) will be featuring their new Spring Collection of fantastic "monogramable" items. Tammy Wright is the owner and she has remarkable products. If you haven't been in yet, take this opportunity. And to delight everyone, Whimsey will provide informal modeling throughout the evening. They have just opened a branch of their Washington boutique in our neighboring center, Arlington Village. While they are not part of the Lynndale Shoppes, Peg and Torrey invited them to particpate. They too are owned by two dynamic women...we all knew it was great to team together for a real Spring Fling on Thursday April 2, from 5:30 til 8:30! We'll send you a reminder e-vite closer to the time!
Have a great weekend,
Jeff

Thursday

Well, we found the lost painting and it has landed safely in the gallery. There happen to be 2 FedEx locations across the Tar River. Peg went to one and was told the package was at the other locale. She was given directions to leave the parking lot by hanging a left, take a right at the Hardee's on the corner, and another right at the Burger King a mile up Hwy 11 and another right into barbed wire fenced FedEx facility. She had to park in a remote locale, go to a gated entrance and ring for assistance, where she was given a code to enter after producing the tracking number and being certified as the "pick up agent"! Go FedEx...You take excellent care of your packages and we trust you even more now! Today was a busy day getting the invitation for the April 2nd Spring Fling wrapped up to go to the printer. I'm going to highlight one of our newer artists, Joyce Stratton. We recently started carrying this energetic painter as we truly believe in her work and confidenly added her to our fold. View more of her works at City Art Gallery
Have a great day,

Whew Wednesday!

This Wednesday was more like a typical Monday. Temporary loss of a FedEx package with a fabulous commission which I think I've just located and am headed out across the great Tar River to retrieve! The image of the painting to the left is by one of our Dutch painters. Her name is Jose van Gool, and we stumbled upon her work in the Corning Gallery in the Steuben Glass building in NYC back in October. We have representing her ever since. This piece is titled "Breeze" and I just sent it out on approval through a designer to travel to New Bern. Here's hoping it will fit the space and please the client! Hope all of you fans had a good hump day and are headed home soon. Talk to you tomorrow.
Cheers!

It's Tuesday!

This shows the gallery wrapped canvas from the side.

This piece is titled "Pears II", acrylic on canvas, 8" x 8" and is a mere $100!!

Jane Hudson, editor of Her Magazine posed a terrific question to her readers' panel in the February issue. She asked "What is the one thing that you will always splurge on?" One (really sharp!) panelist answered "For a true indulgence, a small painting from City Art Gallery in the Lynndale Shoppes - a visual treat that you will enjoy forever." Naturally we enjoyed this remark! And it just so happens that Kristin Gibson has just delivered a very fine group of small paintings to us at the gallery. Kristin is an ECU graduate and has a fresh , unique approach to her paintings. She works in her home studio and sets up her still lifes and then paints. They are all on gallery wrapped canvases, meaning that the stretcher bars that the canvas is attached to are especially deep, and the staples are hidden in the back. This allows her to continue her image on all four sides of the canvas, thus it is not necessary to frame the pieces. Of course you can frame the painting if you so desire! You should check out Kristin's work on our web site and you'll find the prices are just perfect for treating yourself to an indulgence or giving as a gift. Coincidentally I have just commissioned Kristin to paint a bridal bouquet as a wedding gift for a dear friend who was married in Palm Beach last weekend. She is great at commissions!

The Day After!

It's always both exhilarating and exhausting during and after the opening receptions. Last night went extremely well. We sold paintings and have more going home on approval for the weekend! This is always a good sign. I opened the gallery this morning and Jeff is coming in "noonish" to re-hang the art works in Chefs 505. That's one of the restaurants in our shopping center and we supply the art for them. This helps them decorate their walls in fine style and it affords us another opportunity to display art for the public to enjoy. Torrey is meeting the artist Karen Lawrence here, also "noonish", to take her out to photograph another lovely home. Karen photographs rooms and then develops her interior paintings based on the photographs. The home owners always have "right of first refusal" to purchase the completed painting. If they pass on it, then the painting goes into a gallery in a town other than where the home is. So...there you have our daily scoop. You can view photos from last night on the web site at CityArt Have a great weekend.
Cheers!

Light Up the Night

We have put the final touches on the show "Light up the Night" which opens tonight! We are featuring the works of Karen Lawrence of Atlanta and Valerie Lennon of Naples. Karen paints wonderful interiors of homes and Valerie paints figures in motion often with musicians. Both have a bold use of color which reflects their "colorful" and unique personalities. These are fun ladies! Take a look at the paintings and come to the opening tonight if you are out and about the town. As always, enjoy the wine tasting provided by Finelli's Cafe. See you there!
Cheers!
