Retired Duke professor and N.C. Literary Hall of Fame inductee James Applewhite inspires new works by 15 artists

City Art Gallery is pleased to announce a multi-media invitational show featuring a collection of artwork based on the poetry of retired Duke professor and North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame inductee James Applewhite. The show opens with a reception on Thursday, January 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at City Art Gallery, 511 Red Banks Road in Greenville. Applewhite will read from his poetry at 7 p.m.

The collection includes paintings, ceramics, photography and sculpture by 15 artists. Each artist was asked to read three poems by Applewhite – Greene County Pastoral, January Farmhouse and Pamlico River – and then create a work inspired by the poem of their choosing.

Participating artists include: Colleen Black-Semelka, Tony Breuer, Ranny Chitwood, Mike Dorsey, Richard Fennell, Richard Garrison, the late Paul Hartley, Jeff Kiefer, Michael Knoch, Louis St. Lewis, Bob Rankin, Joyce Stratton, Sally Sutton, Jim Tisando and Kate Worm.

The show continues through February 6 and benefits the North Carolina Literary Review, an annual publication produced by East Carolina University. Margaret Bauer, editor of the North Carolina Literary Review, will make opening remarks. For more information, visit CityArtGreenville.com.

Calling all graffiti artists! "Banksy" is a great British street artist, known for producing images on walls of buildings, sidewalks, fallen trees, bridges, and other imaginative places. His messages are sometimes comical, and often political and social in nature. Initailly an unknown, he has developed quite a popular cult following, and people are now flattered to have this phenomenal artist paint on their wall! His first film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" opened at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. It is available on DVD in the US.

Bird Nest Adventure Series

Gallery artist, Hilda Spain-Owen decided to paint bird nests, exploring the twists and turns of the lines of nature. Her life took some twists and turns of its own about that time so she incorporated that into her art. A brand new shipment of rainbow-colored champagne flutes, wine glasses and sherbet bowls/old fashioned glasses just arrived from the Tennessee foothills glass studio of Prentice Hicks.

The rural setting of Prentice's family dwelling and glass studio in the former Wauhatchie tribe area with a stream flowing through the nearby cove, creates an ideal atmosphere for quiet concentration and work. Prentice prefers to work alone and uses no tools when forming the cup of his stemware.

He works with heat, centrifugal force and gravity to achieve the desired results. He keeps his pieces loose and fluid, characteristics Prentice believes reflect the properties of glass itself. He describes the resulting stemware as "easy to hold, attractive to use and friendly to the touch."

Meet the creator of Fish Chum Master "Pieces" this weekend at the Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach. Terry Brennan of Little River, SC uses repurposed materials to make his fish creatures and says the process "always begins with a single item, whether it be a broken chair, a rake or a discarded silver bowl."

The annual summer show at the Coral Bay Club is Sunday, June 27 from 12 to 6 p.m. and Monday, June 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please join us!

We had a very fun opening Thursday night for our Summer Salon show. We did an

experiment and sent evites only, and no snail mail invitation. We had a great and enthusiastic crowd. And we had a very special little visitor to come. Look at those eyes!

Who Knew!!

So we arrive at the Gallery for the opening last night and in the parking lot are 4...count them...4 purple and gold cornhole game tables with coordinating puple and gold beanbags for tossing! After all, we do live in Grenville, NC, home of the ECU fighting pirates whose colors are...you guessed properly...purple and gold! The music was playing loudly on the patio and the margaritas were free flowing. A festive and welcomed beginning to the evening. On the inside we were featuring large glasses of wine and champagne and more importantly, painting demos. Kristin and Mike were great sports to be here painting for the entire 2 + hours. Thanks guys! "I was fortunate enough to be in London last Thursday for the opening of 'Lingering Whispers' at The Crypt Gallery. Very edgy and fun. This gallery is literally in the crypt of St. Pancreas Church. "Landscape offers a painter 'variation on a theme;' a theme seasoned with color and compositions structured by location. I paint where I live... where the better part of one's spirit resides... a kingdom within, a wealth of lands..."

"It is always a visual response to a subject. The interesting composition and the way the light creates the desire to capture that particular scene. The difficulty is simplifying the subject because there is an overwhelming amount of information and our eyes see it all.

The challenge then is to capture the essence and state it in such a way that the viewer responds favorably to the image. The best way to paint a landscape is to be there on location- plein aire painting. Often the weather does not cooperate so the camera comes into play, but having been there, feeling the mood, remembering the moment helps when painting in the studio."

"Dreams of journeys to come...For me with this small painting it was all about my thoughts of adventures to come...I'm teaching a class at Lake Garda this September and this painting is a reaching out to new vistas as I study and learn about this area of Italy, loll over photos from our hosts who go there every year and savor the excitement of a new (to me) landscape. This particular scene had it all...water, mountains, distant boats and billowing clouds...it's the ultimate escape!"

While viewing a scene that captures my heart - during the quiet concentration involved in capturing what I see and feel, those moments become charged with brilliance and wonder, and all else is forgotten. "Surrounded by tall buildings, an ever constant cacophony of noise and movement, I live in a crowded town that never sleeps, New York City. My studio faces east, making the buildings black against the morning sky, their colors, forms and moods changing with the light. Light is my subject, the figure my object, which, when placed before a window with the ever changing shapes behind, becomes a metaphor for stillness."

"Living in the Bay Area keeps me around water all the time. I chose to move here 15 years ago for many reasons but a couple of them being the weather that keeps me outdoors daily and the constant access to the views of the water. I cross the Golden Gate Bridge every day and am in awe of the Pacific Ocean and the Bay which all of us live around and treasure. San Francisco is a city, but it feels like a town. It is approachable, sophisticated and full of the greatest light. Every day I can see the horizon line around me and breathe in the sky and the ocean. I am blessed for that. I can paint in the studio, head downtown to see an exhibition and wrap up my afternoon with a drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and a hike in the Marin mountains. My studio is blocks from the ocean. I paint indoors but every time I am outside, I capture a feeling that I want to express on canvas. We live within an hour of the wine country where I find inspiration for my fields, trees and rolling hills. I love the east and west coasts for many of the same reasons and both influence me immensely. I love the history and rugged coastline of the east coast where I grew up and I love the open and wildness of the west coast where I have settled."

"Here are a few things that come to mind regarding 'place.' In general, I suppose I feel a bit 'dis' placed. I have moved around quite a bit throughout my life. As a child I grew up in Michigan, so I was familiar with life in the Midwest when I returned here after living for fourteen years in New York. In some ways I still feel like a stranger in Bloomington – I get lost on short drives outside of town. We have the New York Times delivered, but sadly, only buy the local paper periodically. The one thing that identifies the Midwest for me is living in a survey township – a feature that is common to Michigan as well. I suppose our 'place' is our home, which I think of as an Edenic space. None of the watercolors that I am including in the show were done in Indiana, but instead were done in Florence and northern Michigan last summer. They are both places close to my heart. I have made seven trips to Italy over the past twenty-five years and have spent extended time in Florence on five occasions, so I know Florence pretty well. I painted some of the places around Florence I love best with a special emphasis on views that included sculpture – which was a sneaky way to get the figure into a number of the paintings. Michigan represents a kind of ideal wildness to me. It is all air, water and sand."

"Living with Chicago weather greatly effects my subject matter. I paint mostly from life, from direct observation so anything I see is a potential subject matter. I prefer not to paint in my studio and venture out of doors but during the winter this time can become greatly reduced because of the cold. This past fall I had two experiences that curbed my plein air (painting outdoors) appetite, one was a bunch of yahoos shooting a gun near me. But the snow is falling in thick flakes and I've new arctic boots so I'm ready to hit the streets of Chicago and cafes once again."

Well after a hectic week we have now the real final date for the Summer Salon at the East Carolina Heart Institute. We are working with the ECU Medical & Health Science Foundation as well as the Institute to make this an amazing event. Kate Worm Night Demo

Well we had a fun time last night, Wayne couldnt make it over for the opening he was feeling under the weather, so Kate did a painting demo during the opening. She did a wonderful figurative piece, I will get some photos from the opening and of the piece on tomorrow. Trapp Visits City Art

Well Wayne Trapp stopped by the gallery today and dropped off some work with his daughter, Devon. While he was here Devon took a picture of Wayne in front of his Big Blue, that sets out front of the Gallery. He dropped off several new pieces, they can be viewed at City Art. The new piece that we featured today is Wonderland, 36 x 36 $3400 it is a great slightly more muted work from Wayne. Well back to work, have a lot to get hung before Thursdays opening. Oh goodness; the week is almost over! Where does time go? I had a very successful visit to DC last weekend. In addition to trying out three "new to me" restaurants (including the amazing Coco Sala...a must try!) the galleries and museums were incredible! The Morandi exhibition at the Phillips was fabulous. Who knew you could do so much with simple objects! I discovered the Burton Marinkovich gallery...a tiny little place, up a flight of stairs, but with a BIG banner outside luring you in. They feature primarily prints and drawings by modern and contemporary masters. I was able to see prints by Motherwell, Hockney, Kandinsky, Diebenkorn and Calder. It was great fun and the very knowledgeable owner was "tending shop" which made it quite an educational experience. Above is a painting by one of my favorite "modern masters" that we carry in our Gallery, Wayne Trapp. He will be featured in the Gallery 2 weeks, beginning Thursday May 7th, along with Kate Worm. More to come on that exhibition and opening.

Time to Fire up the wood Kiln!

Here is a work by Jeremy Fineman, a great ceramics artist at ECU. This is a ceramic vessell aprox. 9 in tall for $125. Tonight I will be helping fire a wood kiln with him, the kiln needs to be constantly maned for 5 days, so this involves shifts of 8 hours. So from 12midnight to 8am I will be feeding wood into the kiln. The constant fuel is what creates the unique finish to wood fired pieces. After the 5 days the kiln has to cool for a week, then we can show you a few pieces that were fired. Have a great weekend, Jeff

The Radish painting (12 by 12 ) by Jaquelin Perry is $325 , what a great price for such a well executed piece . Everett Seafood 6 by 8 is by Mike Rooney and is $125, another fabulous price. Both of these artists are being featured in our current exhibit known as Spring Fling. Those lucky people attending the opening on April 2 were treated to a painting demonstration by Perry and Rooney. The exhibit will continue through May 2. It's continuing education time for me! I am leaving tomorrow for DC for a long weekend of gallery hopping, museum viewing, and meeting with artists from the northern Virginia and DC area. The Phillips Collection (my personal favorite!) is featuring Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life. Giorgio Morandi was an Italian painter who shared a tiny apartment with his mother and three sisters growing up in Bologna. He painted from an early age and only had the resources for subject matter that were part of his home environment. He created numerous still life paintings by rearranging simple objects like bottles, jars, and pitchers. He captured the beauty of light on these simple forms. The National Portrait Gallery is featuring Presidents in Waiting. This exhibition focuses on the fourteen vice presidents who succeeded to the presidency, either upon the death of a sitting president, election in their own right, or (in one case), the resignation of a president. Can't wait. Off to the Capitol City! I'll post new info when I return on Monday.

It's Almost Spring Fling!!

Well, we made it through April Fools Day with only minor glitches! Jeff has patched and painted the walls; Torrey has hung another great show; and I have all of the title cards and resumes printed, and the web site updated. Tomorrow night is the opening of our second (perhaps annual!) SPRING FLING!! We are teaming with Finelli's (our great Italian neighbor), It's Sew Wright (with everything to monogram you can dream of), Bailey's Fine Jewelry ("Fine" says it all), and the new spring fashions of Whimsey. Finelli's is hosting a superb wine tasting on the patio with 4 different wine reps pouring from 4 separate vineyards. We are hosting Adam Sebti and Jared Walker on keyboard and guitar with light jazz right outside of our open doors. Jaquelin Perry and Mike Rooney will be painting inside the gallery for your enjoyment. We have even extended the hours to accomodate everyone's hectic schedule...5:30 til 8:30. You need to be here Thursday night April 2nd. See you then!
